Hawaii 8th graders lift science scores slightly
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii eighth graders scored higher in national science tests last year, but the state is still lagging behind the rest of the nation.
The average score for Hawaii eight graders on the National Assessment of Educational Progress improved a few points in 2011 compared to 2009.
But 45 percent still scored below basic level. Thirty-three percent scored at basic, 21 percent were proficient, and 1 percent were advanced.
Hawaii performed better than only Mississippi and the District of Columbia. It scored about the same as Alabama, Louisiana, Arizona and California, but did worse than every other state.
State schools superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi said in a statement Thursday Hawaii eighth graders have narrowed the achievement gap with their peers across the nation but the state still has more work to do.
