The Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Mamalahoa, invites the community to its annual free festival in honor of Kamehameha the Great from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. June 9 at Moku Ola (Island of Life), aka Coconut Island in Hilo.
Enjoy traditional Hawaiian music and dance, learn from cultural practitioners, attend an oli (chant) exhibition and a pu, or seashell, blowing contest for all ages, while dining on onolicious food and shopping for Hawaii-made arts and crafts.
It is an alcohol- and tobacco-free event, said spokeswoman Pua Ishibashi. For more information, please visit www.kamehamehafestival.org.
Walk and shop on Alii Drive
Historic Kailua Village will once again ramp up the fun for Kokua Kailua on May 20. There are those that anticipate Kokua Kailua, mark their calendars and come each and every month. And there are those who have yet to discover this monthly event when oceanfront Alii Drive is transformed into a pedestrian-only walkway from 1-6 p.m.
Kokua Kailua presents kamaaina and visitors a unique opportunity to stroll in and out of the array of shops and restaurants in Kailua-Kona. And there is the added bonus of dozens of vendors lining Alii Drive with tempting island-made crafts, art and more. Free entertainment on the lawn at Hulihee Palace begins at 4 p.m.
The following Kokua Kailua will be on Sunday, June 10.
Malamalama receives grant
Puna’s Malamalama Waldorf School has received a generous $23,330 grant award from the McInerny Foundation for the school’s Scholarship/Tuition Assistance Program.
School Administrative Chair Kehaulani Costa noted that the foundation has supported Malamalama for many years.
For more than 30 years, the Malamalama Waldorf School, the only non-sectarian, non-denominational independent school offering the internationally recognized Waldorf curriculum in Hawaii County, has met the educational needs of its students.
The school has been able to meet this aim by “incorporating the arts and hands-on learning activities in conjunction with academics while focusing on educating the whole child: head, heart and hands.
“The school and community are very thankful to the McInerny Foundation, who time and again provide generous awards,” said Costa. To find out more about Malamalama Waldorf School and student discounts, please call 982-7806.
