Army sergeant gets 10 years for hit-and-run
HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii judge has sentenced an Army sergeant to the maximum 10-year prison term for the 2010 hit-and-run crash that killed an 18-year-old bicyclist.
Sgt. Douglas Curtis apologized in court Thursday to the family and friends of Zachary Manago.
Defense attorney Jonathan Burge tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (http://bit.ly/J5Ioac) Curtis is also facing discharge from the military because he cannot remain in the Army with a felony conviction.
Curtis was arrested after Manago’s friend tracked down Curtis’ badly damaged sport utility vehicle. He told police at the time he believed he had struck a pig or small animal and later pleaded no contest.
Curtis asked for forgiveness, saying he constantly thinks about what happened.
