University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s basketball coach Jeff Law has signed Oxone Mavungu to a national letter of intent.

University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s basketball coach Jeff Law has signed Oxone Mavungu to a national letter of intent.

The 6-foot-4 forward will play for the Vulcans this coming season.

“He is a powerful, versatile athlete,” said Law. “He will help us inside and out.

“Ox brings a level of maturity to the roster and will help immediately.”

Mavungu is originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He sat out this past season at Grossmont College in San Diego after averaging 16.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game the previous season.

“He was on our recruiting radar last year but for a couple of reasons it didn’t come together,” Law said. “I feel extremely fortunate that our paths crossed again.”

Mavungu becomes the third player to join the Vulcans during this signing period. Signing earlier was a pair of 6-3 guards in Derek Owens and Lucas Swanson from Clark Community College in Vancouver, Wash.
