Sewage spill closed Kauai’s Kalapaki Beach
LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — A sewage spill has closed a Kauai beach after between 400,000 and 500,000 gallons of treated effluent went into a storm drain leading into the bay.
Wastewater officials expect Kalapaki Beach to remain closed until at least Friday because of the sewage spill at the Lihue Wastewater Treatment Plant on Wednesday. The spill occurred because of a partial power outage. The exact cause of the outage is unknown but it appears to have occurred on an internal circuit and did not involve the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative.
Crews are testing water samples. Signs have been posted along the beach.
