HONOLULU (AP) — The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is returning to San Diego without a sailor who’s facing burglary and criminal property damage charges in Waikiki.
Sailor Christopher Rico made an initial appearance in Honolulu District Court on Friday as the carrier left Pearl Harbor without him.
Police said Rico broke into an apartment in Waikiki through a window early Wednesday morning and assaulted one of the two people who lived inside the apartment when confronted.
Police said security guards from a nearby building heard the struggle and detained Rico.
Authorities said Rico also matches the description of a suspect in another criminal property damage case. He’s being held in custody on $11,000 bail.
If Rico is guilty, he’ll be held accountable for the crimes, Navy Region Hawaii Deputy Public Affairs Officer Bill Doughty, said.
Doughty said Rico has been in the Navy for 11 months.
The USS Carl Vinson and its 4,388 sailors arrived in Honolulu on Tuesday on the trip home from a six-month deployment to Asia and the Middle East.
