Marion “Sonny” Tavares, 88, of Hilo, formerly of Honomu, died May 13 at home. Born in Honomu, he was a retired county firefighter, a rancher, U.S. Army World War II veteran and member of Independent Cane Planters Association and Honomu Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Visitation 8-10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo. Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2. Casual attire. Survived by wife, Laura G.
