Born in Berkeley, Calif., he was a retired Hawaiian Telephone Co. engineer, World War II U.S. Army Veteran, co-founder of the Hilo Sailing Club and member of the Hilo Rotary Club, Kawaihae Boating Association, and Big Island Amateur Radio Club. Survived by wife, Momi Shoemaker of Waimea; sons Karl (Joanie) Shoemaker of Spokane, Wash., and Phillip (Libby) Hervey of Bend, Ore.; daughters, Sandra (Douglas) Carr and Iayon (Robert Hassey) Shoemaker of Waikoloa, Sydney (Lawrence) Stevens of Waimea; brother, Richard (Mary) Millen of Brisbane, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
