Born in Berkeley, Calif., he was a retired Hawaiian Telephone Co. engineer, World War II U.S. Army Veteran, co-founder of the Hilo Sailing Club and member of the Hilo Rotary Club, Kawaihae Boating Association, and Big Island Amateur Radio Club. Survived by wife, Momi Shoemaker of Waimea; sons Karl (Joanie) Shoemaker of Spokane, Wash., and Phillip (Libby) Hervey of Bend, Ore.; daughters, Sandra (Douglas) Carr and Iayon (Robert Hassey) Shoemaker of Waikoloa, Sydney (Lawrence) Stevens of Waimea; brother, Richard (Mary) Millen of Brisbane, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. William Shinichi Shimabukuro, 80, of Hilo died May 12 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he owned the former Shima’s Electric and was a U.S. Army Korean War-era veteran.
