While their team name and division has changed, a handful of Hilo-area players hope their showing at the Kona PONY Baseball Memorial Day Tournament remains the same.

The three-day tourney begins Saturday and runs through Monday at Old Kona Airport Park, with 44 teams playing a total of 72 games.

The tournament features three age groups: Pinto (ages 7-8), Mustang (9-10) and Bronco (11-12).

Last year, the Hilo-based Andrews Braves won their second consecutive Mustang Division title, beating the Westside Bombers of Kailua, Oahu, 6-1 in the championship game.

Many of the same players on that team will compete as members of the Bronco Division’s Andrews Chiefs this year.

Teams from the Ewa Beach and Mililani areas have performed well at the annual Kona PONY tournament in the past, and tournament director Randy Morris figures Mililani Booyaa will give the Andrews Chiefs a stiff test in an opening-round game on Saturday, with the winner having a strong chance to take the Bronco title.

The Mustang Division features several teams making their Kona PONY tournament debuts, with Morris tabbing Hilo-based Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island as strong contender.

Before the Andrews Braves won back-to-back Mustang titles, Mililani-area teams claimed crowns in the division in 2008 and 2009.

As it has in the past, the tournament will include a home run derby in each division, with the Bronco event set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Pinto and Mustang derbies will take place at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, on Sunday.
