Lawsuit seeks rail survey on Hawaiian remains
HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii Supreme Court is being asked to put a stop to work on Honolulu’s rail system until an archaeological survey determines whether construction will disturb Hawaiian burials.
The lawsuit claims the city illegally divided the rail route into segments and launched the project before all segments were surveyed.
The city has been conducting surveys of segments along the 20-mile route from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center. The Kapolei survey has been completed and construction has started there.
In March 2011, a Circuit Court dismissed Paulette Kaleikini’s lawsuit and she then appealed to the state Supreme Court.
The high court did not immediately rule on arguments by her attorney.
