Young Music Studio students and the Orchid Isle Youth and Community Orchestra will present their spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in downtown Hilo. The public is invited to this free classical music concert.

Young Music Studio violin, viola, cello, and piano students will start the program with ensemble and solo music by Bach, Schumann, Mozart, Handel and others.

Guest conductor Matt Howell will lead the Orchid Isle Youth and Community Orchestra in Aaron Copland’s Hoe-Down and Isaac Albéniz’s Cordoba. Cordoba is a guitar piece, arranged for string orchestra by Mark Mulligan, who is brother of Cathy Young, director of the Young Music Studio and Orchid Isle Orchestra.

The orchestra will also play selections from the Purcell opera Dido and Aeneas, with guest soprano Sakura Hioki, a performing arts student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The Orchid Isle Youth and Community Orchestra combines talent from Big Island teaching studios with musicians from the community.

The East Hawaii Cultural Center is at the corner of Kalakaua and Kinoole streets. For more information, call Cathy Young at 982-9307.
