Two Kona residents alleged to have kidnapped a man at knife point and used his identity while shoplifting the Hilo Walmart were arrested Tuesday.
The duo, Angelea Maldonado and Dane Frank Kendrick, were caught by store security.
Once caught, Kendrick, 29, tried to use the name of a 23-year-old Volcano man he had forced into his vehicle with a blade earlier that day, police said in a press release.
Kendrick and Maldonado, 21, demanded drugs from the man after entering his home, police say.
That man, whom police did not identify, was left in the vehicle parked outside Walmart.
Police say the man exited the vehicle and contacted authorities after Kendrick and Maldonado went into the store. He was not injured.
Maldonado was charged Thursday with shoplifting.
She was released pending further investigation and after posting $250 bail.
Kendrick was charged Thursday with shoplifting, first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping, and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug. His bail was set at $71,000.
Kendrick was hospitalized at Hilo Medical Center and couldn’t make a Friday court appearance.
Police could not be reached for further comment.
