HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities are urging residents of Waialua and Ewa to be vigilant after two homes were destroyed in separate fires, a fire was set on a farm lot and a wildfire threatened homes.
Investigators have determined that a May 7 blaze that destroyed a converted tram car that was the makeshift home of a farmer was intentionally set,.
A storage shed also was destroyed, but no fruits or vegetables on the property were damaged.
Then during the morning of May 22, six small fires broke out on a farm lot in Waialua, burning a storage shed and a car, the newspaper said.
After fire investigators found six different points of ignition, they turned their findings over to police, who opened an arson investigation.
“It’s obvious to us those were intentionally set because of the location in proximity and time to the original fire,” Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said.
“We can rule out a broadcast fire,” in which embers from one fire ignite other fires,” he said.
Later that day, an afternoon fire destroyed an Ewa Beach house, leaving a family of four homeless.
Police also are investigating this fire, which was determined to have been intentionally set.
The blaze appeared to have started in the carport of the home, Seelig said, but he did not provide additional details.
Then a little before 10 p.m., a wildfire threatened homes before firefighters we able to bring it under control.
