HONOLULU (AP) — U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono is officially running to succeed U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka.
Hirono’s campaign said she filed nomination papers at the state elections office in Pearl City on Wednesday.
She’s competing against former Congressman Ed Case for the Democratic nomination. Former Gov. Linda Lingle and attorney John Carroll are running for the Republican nomination. Hirono says her family lived paycheck to paycheck when she was growing up, like too many families today.
She says she understands what families are facing, and this is why she’s focused on getting the economy back on track and creating jobs. Akaka is retiring and not running for re-election. He is 87.
