On Sunday, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will celebrate National Trails Day by offering the field seminar “Kona Trail Sneak Preview at Kahuku.”

Join park ranger John Stallman for a guided interpretive walk along a new loop trail at Kahuku.

This four- mile roundtrip trek through the scenic highland pastures offers participants a sneak preview of the Kona Trail, which is not yet open to the general public.

Entry to Kahuku is free. To register for the “Kona Trail Sneak Preview at Kahuku” field seminar, call 985-7373 or visit www.fhvnp.org.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore a recovering native landscape that is springing to life through the protection and stewardship of the National Park Service.

“Excellent bird-watching opportunities abound, with Hawaiian honeycreepers foraging among stately ohia and koa trees, and io (Hawaiian hawks) soaring overhead,” said Stallman. “Learn the natural and cultural heritage of this special place. Discover the serenity and solitude of Kahuku.”

This experience is rated moderate, with four miles of hiking roundtrip with a 500-foot elevation loss/gain. Hikers should be prepared for the approximately 4,000-foot base elevation as well as for variable weather conditions, including sunny, windy, chilly and/or rainy.

This field seminar is presented by the Hawaii Volcanoes Institute, a program of the Friends, a nonprofit organization. Program cost is $50 for Friends members and $70 for non-members. Students (K-12 and college with valid student ID) are half-price. Non-members are welcome to join the Friends in order to get the member discount.

The Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located in the Ka‘u District between mile markers 70 and 71 off Highway 11. This program is funded in part by the county Department of Research and Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
