“The Garden as Paradise” will be the fourth in a series of five Lyman Museum excursions looking at self-sufficiency and beauty in East Hawaii. The Saturday, June 16, excursion will include a visit to the studio and luxuriant garden of artist Stephen Friedman; a breathtaking “pool garden” (small, water-plant-filled pools terraced down a hillside); a beautiful day lily garden resplendent with variegated lilies, and other private gardens, all of which speak to the idea of “living in Paradise.”

Judith Kirkendall and Leslie Lang will lead the excursion. Kirkendall is a historian and anthropologist who specializes in the anthropology of food. Lang, author of Exploring Historic Hilo and co-author of Mauna Kea, has a master’s degree in cultural anthropology with a focus on Hawaii and the Pacific region.
The excursion begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends about 3 p.m., with chauffeured transportation, free entry to all activities, and lunch provided.
All tickets include free admission to the Lyman Museum within one month of the excursion. Cost is $75, $65 for Lyman Museum members. To register, please call the museum at 935-5021.
