Fire crews battling another blaze in Waianae
WAIANAE, Hawaii (AP) — A day after fire crews contained a leeward Oahu wildfire that burned 1,200 acres over several days, county firefighters returned to Waianae to fight yet another blaze.
Fire officials say a fire that started Thursday in Waianae Valley is unrelated to one that began Monday near Navy property in Lualualei Valley and spread over to Waianae Valley.
Capt. Terry Seelig says crews are making progress on fully containing the latest blaze, but it’s dependent on Friday’s winds. The slow-moving fire is up against a flank of a ridge the divides Waianae Valley from Makaha Valley. About 150 acres have burned.
A Red Cross shelter that closed Wednesday reopened for several hours Thursday.
