Aloha Performing Arts Company has completed the casting of its summer production of “School House Rock Live! Jr.” slated to run at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu June 15-24, with Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m..
Playing the role of Tom, the novice teacher, is sophomore Zachary Kaneshiro. Joining him in this ensemble cast are Tia Amafala, Nicole Aragon, Heather Bartlett, Maddy Bram, Kiana Ching, Samara Clark, Emily Dungate, Simon Ellis, Veronika Freire, Alicia Hicks, Ariana Kaneshiro, James Kelsey, Taylor Kinsey, Maya Krauss, Zea Levine, Miles Lugo, Kyndra Nakamoto, Melina Ramirez, Sarah Rouse, Jamie Saito, Keawe Strance, Justyn Toyama, Sidney Kobayashi, Madison Vetter, Nanea Wall and Kaela Yamane.
“School House Rock Live! Jr.” is based on the Emmy Award-winning 1970s cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math, science, and politics through clever, tuneful songs such as “Unpack Your Adjectives,” “Conjunction Junction” and “Do the Circulations.” In this junior production, students range in age from 8 to 18 and hail from 15 local schools, including Hawaii Community College, Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Holualoa Elementary, Home School, Hualalai Academy, Innovations Public Charter School, Kamehameha Schools, Kona Pacific Public Charter School, Kealakehe Elementary, Intermediate & High Schools, Konawaena Elementary, Intermediate & High Schools and West Hawaii Explorations Academy.
Guest direction is by Hualalai Academy instructor Sue Boyum, with Robin O’Hara as her assistant. Ariana Bassett is technical director, Karen Barry is the producer, and choreography is by David Payne. Designers include Boyum, makeup; Saffy Datta, lighting; DK Place, sound; Hadley Catalano, sets, and Elizabeth Sharma, props. Sharma is also teaming with Boyum on the costume design.
