17 arrested for drunken driving

During the week of June 4-10, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

During the week of June 4-10, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo and Puna, 3 each.

So far this year, there have been 630 DUI arrests compared to 648 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.8 percent.

There have been 657 major accidents so far this year compared to 613 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 27.3 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs and one to alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
