During the week of June 11-17, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunken driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 8; South Hilo, 7; and Puna, 1.
So far this year, there have been 646 DUI arrests compared to 675 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.3 percent.
There have been 676 major accidents so far this year compared to 636 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.3 percent.
So far this year, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 11 during the same period last year, an increase of 27.3 percent.
So far, six of the deaths have been related to drugs, three to alcohol, and another two, a combination of both, for a total of 11 fatalities due to impaired driving, police said.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
