Sibling of Vul signs
East Carolina catcher/outfielder Rebecca Lee will transfer to the University of Hawaii at Hilo softball team, with immediate knowledge about the program. The 2010 Mililani graduate is the sister of former Vulcan Dana Lee.
The Division I transfer will have two years of eligibility. Lee batted .200 in 85 at-bats over 28 starts. She had no homers and 19 RBIs as the Pirates backup catcher to Kai Clark, a returning senior.
“Rebecca is a great addition to our program,” said UHH coach Jaime Wallin. “Rebecca brings athletic tools that we need — speed from the left side of the plate and defensive versatility — as well as game experience and a competitive perspective that will be a real asset to our program.”
Mililani captured the Division I state tournament in her junior year. Off the field, Lee, who will major in business, is a two-time principal’s list selection and an honor roll member since sixth grade.
Lee’s signing brings Wallins 2012 recruiting class to five. Committing to the Vulcans earlier were Kaylie Drew (5-11 infielder, Fallbrook, Calif.), Brittany Huff (5-3 infielder, Las Vegas, Nev.), Hannah Peterson (5-6 pitcher, Alta Loma, Calif.) and Brandi Wilson (5-5 outfielder, Glendora, Calif.).
New coach gets pub
Even before her first practice, University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s soccer coach Unity Beddingfield has garnered attention.
At the Topdrawersoccer.com website’s “5v5: College Coaching Changes,” the question of “Who is the best new hire in women’s college soccer?” was posed.
Charlie Nobile, of United States Football Club, noted “Are we only talking Division I? How about Hawaii Hilo’s Unity Beddingfield? She’s young, energetic, and she has a great name.”
Beddingfield takes over the UH Hilo program after a year as the assistant coach at San Bernardino Valley College where the team finished 15-6-3.

The Hilo Ohana Horseshoe Pitchers Club hosted a singles horseshoe tournament last Saturday at the Uncle David Calles Sr. Horseshoe Courts at Onekahakaha Beach Park. Following are results

Hawaii Stars to honor Waiakea
The Hawaii Stars will recognize Division I state baseball champion Waiakea on Tuesday night at Wong Stadium before the start of the six-game series against Na Koa Ikaika Maui with a short program at 5 p.m.
The game between Hawaii and Maui will start at 5:35 p.m. Probable starters are Ronnie Loeffler for the Stars and Japan’s Eri “Knuckle Princess” for Maui.
On Thursday, June 28, the Hawaii Stars will feature Boys and Girls Club League night.
There will be free admission for all Mustang, Bronco, Pony, Pinto, RBI girls softball and RBI Junior teams wearing their jerseys and caps. On the field, the Hawaii Stars will recognize the All-Star Pinto (ages 7-8) team at 5 p.m. All other All-Star Teams: Mustang (2 teams), Bronco (2) and PONY (2) will line-up along the upstairs walkway to be recognized.
On Sunday, July 1, there will be free admission for all T-Ball and Coach Pitch Teams from: Andrews Athletics, Waiakea-Uka Athletics, Keaukaha Athletics, Wreckers and Kona Pony Baseball players wearing their jerseys and caps.
