Christine Leonard-Osterwalder, a University of Hawaii at Hilo communication professor, will be the keynote speaker. The title of her speech is “Good Communication for a Strong Future.”
Another guest speaker, Councilman Dominic Yagong, will discuss “The Importance of Communication in Leadership.”
Toastmasters District No. 49 representative Richard Hernandez of Oahu will focus on the benefits of joining a Toastmasters club.
“We are proud of our successful club,” said Hilo Toastmasters President Kathy Emery. “We are especially gratified that the club has been around for such a long time, since 1952. Hawaii wasn’t even a state yet.”
Club Vice President of Education Shawndra Holmberg noted that “to be a club for this long is amazing when you think of the swell of Toastmasters clubs out there.” Right now there are two community clubs on the Big Island. The Kona Toastmasters Club was chartered in 1992. Today Toastmasters International has more than 270,000 members in more than 13,000 clubs in 116 countries. Hawaii has 59 clubs.
Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people of all backgrounds become more confident in front of an audience. Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations.
