WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A Wailuku man and his live-in girlfriend are back in custody after a Maui grand jury indicted them in connection with the death of the man’s 4-year-old son.
Kyle McKeown, 32, and his girlfriend, Grace Lee-Nakamoto, 27, were both being held on $1 million in bail after they were indicted on second-degree murder charges and were taken into custody Friday, officials said.
McKeown and Lee-Nakamoto had previously been arrested on suspicion of murder after McKeown had brought his son, Zion, to Maui Memorial Medical Center on May 29 when the boy was found unresponsive in the shower at home.
The boy died the next day. Doctors said the child died of injuries caused by severe blunt force trauma to his internal organs. An autopsy found the boy suffered blunt force trauma to his lower abdomen, “with the injuries most likely coming from someone stomping on him while he was lying on the ground,” according to an affidavit filed in the case.
McKeown and Lee-Nakamoto had claimed the boy sustained some of his injuries after falling in a shower.
After their initial arrest, a judge released the couple on June 5 when lawyers for both sides agreed the two should be freed because the investigation remained ongoing.
