Support the Stars

Professional baseball is back in Hilo, and what fun!

Our Hawaii Stars have some local boys on the team, including ace pitcher Ronnie Loeffler, and they wonderfully fill the gap left when the previous league folded back in the last century. They kinda sneaked in without much fanfare when another Hawaii team backed out, leaving an opening for Hilo.

Prices are low and (unfortunately) so is the fan count, although around 500 showed up when Eri Yoshida, the knuckleball princess from Maui, pitched. (It took a while, but the Hilo boys figured out how to hit her pitches and won the game going away.) And, yes, they do play in the rain … for a while, at least.

I cannot claim to be a true baseball fan, although I do try to see the last part of the seventh game of the world series (if it goes that far); however, there’s very little that my wife and I enjoy more than going out to Wong Stadium to cheer our Stars on. And when Matt Hibbert gets on base, it’s a thrill to see him worry the pitcher with his constant threat to steal.

My only complaint is that the concessionaire doesn’t put enough chili in the chili and rice, but I’ll learn to live with it. The next home game is at 5:35 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10. Come out and cheer our boys to victory!

Use your headlights

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Big Island and enjoyed our visit very much. However, as we soon found out, it does rain often on the windward side of the island, and we were rather surprised at the number of motorists who did not bother using their headlights in the rainy conditions.

From a quick observation, only about 50 percent of vehicles appeared to be using their headlights during the frequent downpours. Surely, this needs to be significantly increased.

Idea for July 4

The following idea may seem far-fetched, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Upholding the ban on illegal drug use and alcohol abuse, especially on that (in)famous and popular sand bar in Kaneohe Bay, should be of paramount concern and enforced nonstop, if we’re to make any headway in combating crime. This idea of digging up the sand bar, loading it onto barges, unloading it at Waikiki Beach and spreading it where needed could be one solution to your erosion problem.

In this way, members of the police force could attend to more pressing problems, instead of monitoring out-of-control revelers making fools of themselves. For you overzealous holiday celebrants, I’d recommend classes in proper behavior and buying a Scrabble board to occupy your hours. You’d be surprised what you could learn.
