PBS Hawaii will show the inspiring and award-winning family film “Circus Dreams” at 8 p.m. Saturday. The vibrant documentary captures the perseverance, teamwork and deep friendships at Circus Smirkus, the acclaimed Vermont-based youth circus, as the cast readies a brand-new show and takes it on the road for 70 performances in 14 towns over seven weeks.
From the grueling training and rigorous rehearsals to the emotional final show of the season, “Circus Dreams” documents a magical summer for a group of extraordinary young people.
Featured players include Thula Martin, a Native Hawaiian hula dancer from Hilo, who grows from an injured child into a confident young woman. She’s joined by clown partners Joy Powers and Maddy Hall who battle self-doubt and tradition as they aim to prove that “girls can be funny, too.” Juggler Jacob Tischler overcomes his isolation and the magnetic supporting cast includes death-defying aerialists and two brothers on a quest to become the best diabolo jugglers in the world.
Martin has gone on to perform professionally in the U.S., Guam and the Philippines. This fall, she will attend Ecole Nationale du Cirque, the world’s premier circus school. Visit http://circusdreams.net.
VAC to open new art gallery
The Volcano Art Center will open a second gallery location in Volcano Village this month. The Rainforest Gallery at Niaulani is accepting new artists who wish to display and sell their work on consignment.
“We are excited to provide the opportunity for even more local artists to gain international recognition,” said VAC Gallery Manager Emily Catey.
Since 1974, the VAC Gallery inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been dedicated to its mission to develop, promote and perpetuate the artistic culture, environment and heritage of Hawaii’s people. Currently representing more than 300 local artists and displaying an extensive collection of fine arts and handcrafts inspired by Hawaii, VAC has been named the “Best Gallery in East Hawaii.”
Artists interested in displaying their work at the new gallery are invited to send a biography, images of their work and a $5 non-refundable application fee to Volcano Art Center, P.O.
