Volunteers will hold a bake sale fund-raiser for the Tasha Ohana Animal Sanctuary at 8 a.m. on Saturday in front of The Most Irresistible Shop in Hilo at 256 Kamehameha Ave. in downtown Hilo.
“We’ll be there until all of the baked goods have been sold,” said a shelter spokesman. “Everyone is invited to stop by, pick up something tasty and find out more about our shelter for rescued animals.”
The nonprofit sanctuary on the outskirts of Hilo is home to more than 70 dogs, 200 cats and six trained pigs. Founded in 2002 by Laurie Lannan and her mother, the late Amy Lannan, it operates on donations from the community and its founders.
The animals come to the sanctuary when no other options are available except euthanasia. Big Island residents bring animals to the shelter because they know that Tasha Ohana will provide a safe and healthy environment on more than 13 acres of land for the animals to live their lives.
“When possible, adoption homes are found, but if not, no animal is put down unless it is sick or has a poor quality of life,” said Laurie Lannan, who operates the shelter pretty much by herself with a few volunteers who share the same beliefs.
Tasha Ohana is always in need of donations for food, vet bills and supplies.
Donations are tax-deductible. To visit the sanctuary to meet a dog or cat, call 959-4534. Email Pay Pal donations to: Tashaohana@yahoo.com or send checks to: Tasha Ohana, 374 Alaloa Road, Hilo, HI 96720.
