The University of Hawaii at Hilo campus is gaining an important sculpture by internationally renowned artist Albert Paley, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts announced recently. The commissioned work of art is under the SFCA’s Art in Public Places Program, started by the state art agency in 1967 under the One Percent for the Arts Legislative mandate.

The University of Hawaii at Hilo campus is gaining an important sculpture by internationally renowned artist Albert Paley, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts announced recently. The commissioned work of art is under the SFCA’s Art in Public Places Program, started by the state art agency in 1967 under the One Percent for the Arts Legislative mandate.

Installation of Paley’s sculpture has begun at the UH-Hilo campus entrance on Kawaili Street, and is set for completion by Sept. 14.

Paley’s design is based on creative ideas from the Art Advisory Committee and representatives of the university and its students, ensuring participation and engagement from the community.

“ I have drawn various cultural references which I feel reflect the character and uniqueness of the Hawaiian culture and its peoples,” said Paley.

“The sculptural commission’s three-dimensional character reflects historic Hawaiian structures, cultural values centered on the people’s fishing rights, harvest, ceremonial gatherings, ancestral burial sites that other important aspects of Hawaiian roots and identity as a people…”
