During a month-long recycling campaign, participating private and public schools throughout the state collected telephone books for the Berry’s Think Yellow, Go Green Recycling Program on behalf of the Hawaiian Telcom Yellow Pages.
Directory collection throughout the islands brought in more than 19,000 phone books, with Big Island schools contributing more than 12,000 directories to this recycling effort.
In first place was Waimea Country School with 4,349, followed by Waiakea High School with 4,233 phone books. Rounding out the Big Island’s top five schools were: Christian Liberty with 1,607; Montessori Education Center of Hawaii with 1,188, and Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School with 740 phone books. Monetary awards were presented to these schools.
“The goal of this program is to promote environmental responsibility and to educate the community on sustainability,” said spokeswoman Donna Tanabe. “So remember to keep your old phone books, donate them to a participating school next year and everyone becomes a winner.”
