2nd ship sunk during RIMPAC
HONOLULU (AP) — Navies participating in Rim of the Pacific exercises off Hawaii sank a decommissioned supply ship in waters more than 15,000 feet deep.
The Canadian submarine HMCS Victoria launched a torpedo that downed the former USS Concord about 60 miles off Kauai on Tuesday.
The Concord is one of three decommissioned ships the military plans to sink during the exercises. The Navy sank the former USS Niagara Falls in waters off Kauai over the weekend.
Environmental and cost concerns had prompted the Navy to observe a moratorium on using old ships for target practice. The Niagara Falls was the first to be sunk since 2010.
The Navy says the exercises provide crews the opportunity to practice tactics, targeting and firing at surface targets. It says this enhances combat readiness.
Arson suspected
at Navy housing
PEARL CITY, Oahu (AP) — Honolulu police investigating several fires in a Navy housing complex have found a spray-painted message suggesting arson was involved.
A 12-year-old boy has been questioned in the weekend fires on the Pearl City Peninsula.
Police won’t provide details on the spray-painted message.
The fires damaged cars and homes, prompting Honolulu police to be assigned to the complex to determine if they were intentionally set.
Security officials at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are also investigating.
Sailor rescued by Coast Guard
PEARL HARBOR, Oahu (AP) — A sailor who is in Hawaii for Rim of the Pacific naval exercises has been evacuated from his San Diego-based ship.
The Coast Guard says a helicopter and plane were sent to conduct a medical evacuation of the 22-year-old sailor aboard the USS Gary. The ship was about 120 miles off Pearl Harbor.
It’s not clear exactly why the sailor needed to be evacuated Tuesday night, but that it was unrelated to any training maneuvers.
The sailor is in stable condition after being taken to Tripler Army Medical Center. The USS Gary is carrying a crew of about 200.
Woman critically hurt at car wash
HONOLULU (AP) — Police say a 74-year-old woman was critically injured when she was pinned between two vehicles at a Honolulu car wash.
Traffic investigators said the woman was securing items in the trunk of her van when the driver of another vehicle accidentally accelerated at the McKinley car wash Tuesday.
Capt. Darren Izumo calls the incident unusual. The woman was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center with leg injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not arrested.
