“Dramatic and exotic” are words that Paris-trained local fashion designer Iris Gil uses to describe the fashion show he’ll present at the Hilo Orchid Society 60th Anniversary Orchid Show and Sale. The Islands of Orchids Fashion Show will highlight the Orchid Show from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Edith Kanaka‘ole Multipurpose Stadium.
Clothing from the islands of Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii and Manhattan will be featured, including vintage dresses from the 1930s and 1940s. Some of the accessories models wear will be available in the orchid show’s benefit silent auction on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4-5.
“Gil will add fresh orchids to the mix to create ‘an exotic transformation of vintage clothing.’ The orchids are a unique augmentation than can be used to embellish the garments and give an updated look to retro clothing,” said spokeswoman Ruth Robison.
Fashion show models will be members of the Hilo Orchid Society, with hair by Styles for You. Hours for the three-day show are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Daily admission is a $5 donation, with keiki ages 12 and under admitted for free. For more information, call 333-1852 or visit www.hiloorchidsociety.org.
