Curtis Beck, P.E., of Hilo was formally installed on the board of directors of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) at its annual meeting July 14 in San Diego, Calif. Beck, an engineer licensed to practice in Hawaii since 1983, was one of 10 professional licensed engineers appointed to the NSPE Board for a two-year term.
With this appointment, Beck has completed a year’s service as chairman of NSPE’s Professional Engineers In Industry Division. He has also served on the Board of Ethical Review since 2008 and was its chairman in 2010.
Beck works for Hawaii Electric Light Co., or HELCO, as manager of the utility’s Energy Services Department. He is a member of the Big Island Chapter of the NSPE, one of two chapters on the island, the other being the Kona-Kohala Chapter. All together, there are four chapters of NSPE in Hawaii that comprise the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers (HSPE).
The NSPE is an association of professional licensed engineers with more than 35,000 members across the country. Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., the organization promotes the licensure of engineers as well as the ethical standards of professional engineering practice.
The HSPE is affiliated with NSPE and has 162 members in the state of Hawaii. HELCO is a regulated electric utility which serves more than 84,000 customer accounts on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Among its many activities, HSPE promotes STEM education through its sponsorship and administration of the MATHCOUNTS program, a statewide math competition and learning program for students in grades 6-8 grades. MATHCOUNTS and other scholarship programs are funded through HSPE’s Educational Foundation.
