Martin Ferrell is the new dean of academics at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, where he is in charge of overseeing all aspects of the school’s K-12 academic program. He also will teach and serve as a member of the school’s residential life team.
Ferrell most recently was lead mentor and history teacher at The Madeira School in Virginia. Over the last 15 years, he also has served in boarding and day schools as a residential faculty member, department head and member of numerous teams working to continually improve curriculum, academic performance and professional development for teachers.
He is a frequent presenter at educational conferences and has been recognized with a number of awards, including the Diana Prince Master Teacher Award, the Golden Apple Award, and Pepsi Teacher of the Year Award. Ferrell earned his Bachelor of Arts in History and Russian Language from Bowdoin College, a master’s in teaching from the University of Virginia and a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College. He is a December 2012 candidate for a Doctorate in Liberal Studies from Georgetown University.
HPA Headmaster Lindsay Barnes also announced that Michelle Guppy has been named director of human resources. Guppy, who has worked in human resources for 16 years, most recently was director of staffing and development at Hualalai Resort and Kona Village. She previously was training manager at Four Seasons Hualalai and store manager and corporate trainer at Starbucks Coffee Co. in Seattle. She earned her master’s degree in human resources management from the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
