HONOLULU (AP) — The state Board of Land and Natural Resource is moving to permanently ban alcohol at a sandbar off Oahu’s windward coast during three-day weekends in the summer.
The rule approved Friday would prohibit alcohol possession, use or consumption in a one-square-mile zone of Kaneohe Bay on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
The ban would also be in effect during any three-day weekend associated with these holidays.
It could be in place over Labor Day weekend if the governor approves it in time.
The state has been trying to crack down on drinking and illegal drugs at the site after a fatal fight on Memorial Day last year. The fight ended in the death of a 26-year-old man.
