Big Island sculptor in ‘Reclaimed Objects’ show
Jozuf Hadley of Honaunau will display several of his “reclaimed objects” sculptures throughout August at the Wailoa Art & Cultural Center in Hilo. His sculptures range in size from 12 inches to seven feet in height.
To make the art pieces, Hadley combines natural objects and manmade things ranging from children’s blocks and wooden tools to pieces of fine Asian art. The natural objects include boars’ teeth, bone disks, shells, pearls, jade, coconuts, turquoise and lauhala.
Hadley began his art career in the 1960s, when he created a stir in the Honolulu art community by covering nude models in large plaster-soaked sheets, which he called “figurecasting.” More recent exhibitionsof include shows at Id-Space Gallery, Wailoa Center 2011, the Society for Kona Arts & Education 2012 Annual Exhibition, the Living Arts Gallery in Hawi, and the 2012 juried Hawaii Craftsmen Show, among others.
Hadley is the creator and co-host of the South Kona Artists’ Group. Members of this group will exhibit their work at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in January 2013. More of Hadley’s work can be seen on his website at www.jozufhadley.com.
