Nikki Nottingham, a 2012 graduate of Pahoa High School, has received an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Scholars Program at Marion Military Institute in Alabama.
Nottingham, a recent graduate of Pahoa High School, will attend her first year of college at the institute, with all expenses paid including roundtrip airfare.
From there, Nottingham will transfer to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., where she will complete her bachelor of science degree and then begin as an ensign to serve a five-year commission in the Coast Guard.
Last summer, Nottingham attended the Academy Introduction Mission program, a one-week summer course that gives high school students the chance to see if the academy is right for them and if they have what it takes to succeed.
Nottingham has wanted to serve in the Coast Guard since she was in intermediate school.
If they are selected, they experience the rigor, discipline and rewards of the academy, just like a cadet, for a week in July following their junior year in high school.
