UHH students awarded national scholarship to study abroad

Three University of Hawaii at Hilo students have been awarded a prestigious national scholarship to study abroad, the Benjamin A. Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.

Hi‘inae Miller will study at the University of Essex in Colchester, United Kingdom. A kinesiology major with an English minor, she is excited to take an array of courses while abroad that will complement her UH-Hilo degrees. Upon her return, she looks forward to sharing her experience with others.

Ron O’Brien is a student in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management with a specialization in tropical horticulture, and will be studying at the Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden. He is passionate about pursuing a career in environmental conservation in Hawaii, and is eager to learn the different techniques and approaches to sustainability taught in Sweden.

Mitchell Sambrano will be headed to Tokyo Gakugei University in Tokyo, Japan. His interest in studying the Japanese language and culture started from when he was a student at Honokaa High School. He hopes that while abroad he will be able to surpass the struggles of speaking Japanese.

The Gilman Scholarship supports students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities.
