During the week of Aug. 6 through Aug. 12 Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, 12 each; Puna, 3.
So far this year, there have been 846 DUI arrests compared with 878 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.6 percent.
There have been 887 major accidents so far this year compared with 836 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been 24 official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 15 during the same period last year, an increase of 60 percent.
To date, 12 of the fatalities are due to impaired driving, police say, with five to drugs, one to alcohol, and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
