James “Jim” Lee Ater, 83, of Hilo died Thursday, Aug. 16, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Oberlin, Kansas, he was a retired Marine Electrician for Kems Inc. on Oahu; a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict; and made koa wood crafts. He was also a member of AFL-CIO IBEW Local Union 1186 and the NEBF. Private services held. Survived by wife, Judith Flores Ater of Hilo; daughters, Jamie S. Ater of Honolulu, and Jessica (Duane) Vargas of Hilo; sons, Mark (Anna) Ater of Hilo and Thomas (Genevieve) Teixeira of Waimanalo, Oahu; sisters, Joanne (Walt) Castle of Oberlin, Kansas, and Jackie (Larry) Rathbun of McCook, Neb.; five granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; one aunt; one cousin; numerous nieces and nephews.
