The Hilo Community Players (HCP) has produced a Shakespeare play in Kalakaua Park every summer for 35 years. But HCP will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2013, so the community at large is invited to help select the play.
“Our Shakespeare performances are always free of charge,” said HCP President Jake McPherson, “but we do ask audiences for donations, so we can keep these summer productions going. In that spirit, we are asking people to choose next year’s play from among those that HCP has not performed during the past 16 years, including some that we have never performed at all.
“We want people to write and tell us which play they would like to see in 2013, and to include a contribution of at least $25 for each play they choose. The play that garners the greatest sum in ‘tribute’ will be our Shakespeare in the Park production next summer.”
Here are the plays to choose from: Comedies: “All’s Well That Ends Well”; “As You Like It”; “The Comedy of Errors”; “The Merry Wives of Windsor”; “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” Histories: “Henry IV, Part I”; “Henry IV, Part II”; “Henry V”; “Henry VI, Part I”; “Henry VI, Part II”; “Henry VI, Part III”; “Henry VIII”; “Richard II”; “King John”; “Cymbeline”; “Pericles.” Tragedies: “Antony and Cleopatra”; “Coriolanus”; “Julius Caesar”; “Troilus and Cressida”; “Timon of Athens”; “Othello.”
“Please mail your selection(s) and check(s) to the Hilo Community Players, P.O. Box 46 Hilo, HI 96721. Include your name and address, email address (if you have one), and signature,” said McPherson. “And if you wish to be listed as ‘anonymous,’ please tell us that too.”
