Hilo High School’s Briahna Brooks showed flashes of midseason form as the Vikings beat Pahoa and Ka’u to open the 2012 Big Island Interscholastic Federation bowling season Saturday at Hilo Lanes.
Brooks, one of the top returning bowlers in the league for the defending champion Viking girls, had the highest series of the day, rolling a 196-186-157—539 total in the win over the Daggers in the afternoon match. Teammate Kylie Fujiyoshi had high games of 155 and 164 for a 444 series to help spark the Hilo pin attack.
Brooks started the morning off with high games of 171 and 160 while determined Kayla Okimoto fired 155 and 168 games to lead Hilo to a 2-1 win over the Trojans.
The Viking girls, under coaches Damien Chow and Michael Wakida, are expected to challenge dangerous Waiakea, under ageless coach Calvin Nakashima, for the league title this season.
On the boys’ side, defending champion Waiakea, under new coach Tracy Nakashima, Hilo, under Chow, and Konawaena, under Clyde Takafuji, are seen as the top contenders this season. But like with the girls, the boys play a single round and anything can happen along the way as the top four teams try to earn berths in the BIIF team playoffs.
“It should be another exciting season,” said longtime Waiakea girls coach Calvin Nakashima. His son, Tracy, takes over the Warrior boys program from Wayne Hayashi, who stepped down at the end of last season after 30 highly successful years at the helm.
“The BIIF has some good bowlers and a lot of the young ones will improve a lot as the season goes along. The battle for both the girls’ and boys’ team championships should be close. It could go either way depending on who steps up in the important games.”
BIIF action continues this coming Saturday at Hilo Lanes and Kona Bowl.
In the 10 a.m. session at Hilo Lanes, it’s St. Joseph vs. Kamehameha, Ka’u vs. Keaau and Pahoa vs. Waiakea. In the 1 p.m. afternoon session, it’s Ka’u vs. Waiakea and Pahoa vs. Keaau.
In the 10 a.m. games at Kona Bowl, it’s Kealakehe vs. Hilo and Konawaena vs. Laupahoehoe. At 1 p.m., it’s Kealakehe vs. Laupahoehoe and Konawaena vs. Hilo.
Warriors, Viks champs
The Waiakea boys, under coach Wayne Hayashi, claimed the league title last year while the Hilo girls, under coach Damien Chow, captured the league crown.
Hayashi, the longtime Waiakea coach, retired as the Warriors coach at the end of last season.
St. Joseph athletic director Chloe Thurston is the BIIF bowling coordinator this season. She will report the weekly scores and update the league standings when possible.
The state bowling championships will be held on Kauai this year, scheduled Saturday, Nov. 3.
