Hawaii tsunami watch cancelled
HONOLULU (AP) — A tsunami watch issued for Hawaii after a major earthquake struck off the coast of the Philippines has been canceled.
The National Weather Service now says there is no threat of a destructive tsunami hitting Hawaii following the earthquake, which struck early Friday. Some coastal areas of the state, however, could still see small sea level changes and strong or unusual currents for several hours starting around 12:30 p.m.
The preliminary magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck in the ocean off the eastern coast of the Philippines at 2:48 a.m. Hawaii time.
At least one person was killed in a house collapse in the Philippines. Power was knocked out in several cities.
