Group cheers were heard throughout the 24th annual Student Leadership Conference, formerly known as SLW, from July 19-21 at Kaimuki High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. More than 400 student leaders, chaperones and advisors attended the high-energy camp organized by members of the 2011-2012 Hawaii State Student Council. The theme for the conference was “Leaders Got Game!”

HSSC Chairperson Keagan Sakai-Kawada said, “Leaders make tremendous sacrifices throughout the entire year; including during the summer. Leaders may fail on a first attempt, but they are ready to get right back up and try again.”

John Quincy Adams, a former president of the United States, once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” This dynamic quote outlined what he hoped each leader learned from attending this conference.

Throughout the three-day conference, student leaders attended workshops and breakout sessions which included topics such as: Effective Communication Strategies; Student Leader Burnout: Preventing Stress and Promoting Personal Wellness; Leading from a Hawaiian Place; Leadership and Team Building; Translating Leadership Into Action; How Leaders See with New Eyes; and Internet Safety, to name a few.

More than 50 student leaders from Honokaa, Kohala, Konawaena, Keaau, Hilo and Waiakea High Schools and Keaau Middle School represented Hawaii district. Each student returned from SLC with a greater sense of school pride, anxiously ready to apply what they learned at their respective schools.

Waiakea High senior class president Jamie Economy commented, “This conference was enriching as the speaker showcase consisting of leadership trainer Ed Gerety, playwright/actor/theatrical producer Josh Rivedal, performer and inspirational speaker Annetta Lucero and State Sen. Jill Tokuda was motivational and encouraging.

The planning committee worked hard to make sure that the conference delegates learned a lot while making new friendships and having fun at the same time.”
