Health caravan to visit rural areas
“WE … a Hui for Health” (WE) will travel, caravan-style, to 16 Hawaii Island communities over the next month to provide residents with free health screenings and education.
WE will offer a comprehensive set of wellness services and support information for vision; lung and kidney function; breast exams; glucose and blood pressure; hepatitis risk assessment; hearing; learning disabilities; cancer; mental health; Medicare; nutrition; disaster preparedness; and counseling for smoking cessation, family caregiving and organ donations.
Throughout 2012, WE will offer 50 individual days of screening across all six major Hawaiian Islands. WE will provide services to at least 8,000 individuals in lower-income, rural areas of the state, many of which are without sufficient medical resources. Many events will be held on Hawaiian Homelands in an effort to increase access to health services and emphasize healthy living for Native Hawaiians.
Free WE events on Hawaii Island are made possible by the financial and material support from various health-related advocacy groups, government agencies, Native Hawaiian health organizations, civic clubs, health and medical centers, and Young Brothers, who provided interisland shipment of the Project Vision Van.
