For the past five years, this eclectic group of artists has opened its members’ studios in Hawaiian Paradise Park, and hosted guest artists as well, on the first weekend in December for a free two-day tour. The public is invited to follow the signs to studio after studio, browsing and buying. A portion of each year’s sales is donated to the art department at one of the area’s schools.
“This artists’ collective has donated nearly $6,000 over five years to Puna District high school art departments,” said Wailoa administrator Codie King.
“The fine arts of painting in various mediums are represented in styles ranging from realism to abstract, along with unique types of locally made jewelry, lava pots, raku pottery and ceramics, native plant dyed fabrics, woods and furniture, handblown glass, fashion and clothing, quilting, doll art, handmade soap and more,” said King.
Friday’s opening reception will feature live music by Tropical Pops, a three-piece harp, flute and bass group. Harpist Cymber Lily Quinn’s first CD, “Seasons of the Soul,” won the 2011 Big Island Music Award in the New Age category. She is also a journalist, Reiki master and harp teacher.
Flute player Tom Geballe has been an astronomer on Mauna Kea for more than 30 years.
Frank Musacchio, a bass player with more than 40 years of performing experience, has covered many styles of music ranging from jazz to rock, folk to acoustic originals and musicals to choral accompaniment. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Wailoa Art & Cultural Center is a facility of the Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources.
