Trial is set for a 34-year-old Hilo man accused of threatening another man with a firearm at a Keaukaha condominium complex and discharging a round in the parking lot.
On Friday, Jarvis Naoki Higa pleaded not guilty to second-degree attempted murder and three firearms violations. Trial is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 before Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara.
Police say that on July 18 at around 1 a.m., Higa threatened a 34-year-old Hilo man in the parking lot of the Orchid Manor condominium on Kalanianaole Avenue and fired a round before fleeing.
The other man was not injured, and Higa was arrested five days later in Mountain View.
If convicted of attempted murder, Higa faces a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole.
According to court records, Higa has 20 criminal convictions, including felony convictions for robbery, terroristic threatening, promoting a dangerous drug and firearms offenses.
Higa is in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $350,000 bail.
