Miguel Montez has been cast in the title role of “The Toxic Avenger,” the next production by Aloha Performing Arts Company. The plot revolves around nerdy Melvin Ferd III, who wants to clean up Tromaville, N.J., but gets dumped into a vat of toxic waste by the mayor’s goons and emerges as a giant green mutant with superpowers.
Miguel Montez has been cast in the title role of “The Toxic Avenger,” the next production by Aloha Performing Arts Company. The plot revolves around nerdy Melvin Ferd III, who wants to clean up Tromaville, N.J., but gets dumped into a vat of toxic waste by the mayor’s goons and emerges as a giant green mutant with superpowers.
Johnny Gomez will play Melvin until he gets dumped in the sludge, and then Montez will emerge as “The Toxic Avenger,” who comes to be referred to as “Toxie.” Gomez also plays The Folk Singer who sings a ballad about Toxie, and Toxie Jr., the child of Toxie and Sarah, the town’s blind librarian, who will be played by Sara Hagen.
Sue Boyum plays three roles: a nun, Tromaville’s Mayor Belgoody, and Melvin’s mother, Eunice Ferd. She has a memorable musical duet in which she plays both Belgoody and Eunice.
The cast is rounded out by Sam Valenti and Binti Bailey, who play over a dozen characters each, including little old ladies, Mexican hairdressers, town bullies and doo-wop girls.
“The Toxic Avenger” is an irreverent, satirical rock and roll musical loosely based on Lloyd Kaufman’s 1985 movie of the same name, with book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, and music and lyrics by David Bryan of Bon Jovi.
The show is headed for Broadway, but in the meantime, APAC is the first non-professional theater anywhere to be granted the performance rights. It will be presented on weekends at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, Oct. 5-20.
Dale Ross will be leading the live rock band assembled for the show, with Jerry Tracy as director, Sue Boyum as vocal director and Lee Vinson as choreographer. Designers include Ariana Bassett, technical and sound; boB Gage, lighting, and Gerald Lucena, set. Merry Harth, Cathy Riehle and Elizabeth Sharma are the team which will create the show’s makeup, hair, costumes and props.
