Blaine K. “Tiger” Faris, 49, of no permanent address, was charged by detectives Friday night. His bail was set at $55,000 and his initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
According to court records, Faris has been convicted on 29 criminal charges. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1991 after pleading no contest to manslaughter in the death of police Officer Ronald “Shige” Jitchaku in 1990. Jitchaku died from injuries he suffered as police attempted to break up a riot involving about 200 people on Banyan Drive in Hilo after a UB40 concert at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Faris also led police on a seven-mile chase by car and on foot in 2004 after escaping from the low-security Hale Nani Correctional Center. It was the third time Faris had fled from authorities in a year, police said at the time.
