During the week of Sept. 10-16, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 16; South Hilo, 7; Hamakua, Puna and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 999 DUI arrests compared to 1,050 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.9 percent.
There have been 1,040 major accidents so far this year compared to 995 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.5 percent.
So far this year, there have been 30 official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to 15 during the same period last year, a 100 percent increase.
To date, 14 fatalities have been linked to impaired drivers, with five related to drugs, three to alcohol and six, a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
