A man and a boy had to be rescued Sunday morning after a rogue wave swept them into the ocean at Keokea Point in Keaukaha, according to the Fire Department.
Six units, including a county helicopter, answered the 10:36 a.m. alarm.
The 9-year-old boy was rescued from the water by a bystander, according to a written Fire Department statement. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center in stable condition, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hayashida.
The man, in his 30s, was rescued from the water by a rescue swimmer dropped into the ocean by the helicopter. The man was loaded into a Billy Pugh net and flown to the shoreline, and an ambulance transported him to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition, Hayashida said.
A Hilo Medical Center spokeswoman said Sunday evening that she couldn’t provide an update on the man’s condition due to the privacy provision of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
