The East Hawaii Cultural Center invites the public to its traditionally fabulous Hilo Haute Trash Fashion Show at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 in the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center Moanahoku Hall.
It’s all a part of the celebration of the 24th annual EHCC Trash Art exhibit juried by Ira Ono, the Volcano artist who founded the trash art show almost a quarter of a century ago.
Local fashionistas, lead by the event’s coordinator Robin Worley (aka Rayona Visqueen) will flaunt their designer detritus in a competition of couture created entirely from Big Island trash.
Sound yucky? It’s nothing of the sort!
Last year’s winners included a fabulous full length gown created from intricately cut butter boxes — the grand prize winner designed by Ashley Kierkiewicz; a sassy little mini dress built from worn-out bicycle tire inner tubes by designer Alessandra Casanova, and a perfect rain resistant Hilo Wedding Gown created out of layers and layers of gossamer white plastic grocery bags degisned by Petina Sonderquest.
“Our local designers rival any big time New York design house with their amazing creativity and attention to detail,” said Worley.
Local celebrity judges will be on hand to award prizes to the lucky winners.
The emcee will be Worley in her incarnation as Rayona Visqueen. Music for the runway show will be provided by The Elementalz, with a pre-show set that begins when the doors open at 7 p.m.
Tickets will be $18 in advance and $20 at the door. Special VIP front row seating will be offered for $25.
Tickets are available for advance purchase at the East Hawaii Cultural Center at 141 Kalakaua St. in downtown Hilo and Ono’s Volcano Garden Arts at 19-3834 Old Volcano Highway in Volcano Village.
